How to Avoid Victim Blaming in Revenge Porn Cases?

Victim blaming is a systemic and damaging practice that is deeply rooting in sexist and discriminatory practices. If you have ever heard “Well she was asking for it.” then you have witnessed victim blaming. At its core, victim blaming shifts the blame from a situation from the perpetrator, to the person being victimized. It is incredibly common in sexual harassment and assault cases, and it is even more common in revenge porn cases. The accepted narrative seems to be that anyone dumb enough to share intimate or explicit photos or videos of themselves should expect that they would wind up online, and therefore their embarrassment is their own fault for not anticipating that outcome to begin with.

This is ludicrous.

Picture is this way. A wealthy man is walking down a crowded street in broad daylight. He is wearing a Rolex watch. A mugger approaches him, bashes him over the head, and takes his watch. Is that man likely to hear “Well what did you expect, wearing a watch like that?”. No. in most criminal situations, the blame lies with the wrongdoer, as it should. Revenge porn and sexual harassment in general is the frustrating exception to that rule.

Victim blaming is so ingrained within the zeitgeist that it can be something that people engage in without even realizing it. Awareness is the first step, so in order to avoid victim blaming in the future, just be aware of it as a common thought pattern and consciously try to replace the revenge porn victim in your mind with someone wearing a nice watch. Victims of revenge porn have had their images and their identities stolen from them. It is not their fault. When are we going to stop punishing people for being sexual beings? The existence of the images and the videos is not the problem and therefore not where the blame should lie.

Remember, blame the person at fault, not the victims.
