How do protect yourself from becoming a victim of revenge porn?

Revenge porn refers to the practice of sharing someone else’s intimate images with the goal of embarrassing or defaming them. It is something that millions of women have experienced in our digitally-focused world, but there are ways to protect yourself.

    • Do not take nude or intimate photos of yourself. This is the only way to be 100% sure that you will never become a victim of revenge porn. This may not seem realistic to many people dating today, but we encourage our clients to get creative when it comes to behaving flirtatiously. Consider sending a photo of just your lingerie, or of an intimate setting like a table for two or a bathtub. This way, you can participate in today’s dating culture without putting yourself at risk.
    • Leave your face out of photos. If you do choose to take and share intimate photos (which is completely your prerogative), protect yourself by leaving your face or any identifying features out of them. This affords you deniability if your pictures are ever posted publicly.

  • Only send intimate photos on select platforms. Consider only using Instagram and Snapchat to send intimate photos. That way, the image doesn’t last forever and you receive a notification when a screenshot is taken. Remember that this is not foolproof. Someone can always take a photo of your temporary image using another device.
  • Store your images securely. Do not store intimate photos in the cloud or on an open device. Keep your content stored locally and password protected. This lowers the likelihood that your images will be found in a hack.
  • Build a strong online persona and monitor your platforms. Creating a positive image of yourself can help you if intimate photos are ever shared by inciting rage in your followers on your behalf. Nothing is stronger than the court of public opinion, and you want that to be on your side. Also, close monitoring of your platforms and accounts can help you find revenge porn early.
